other assorted 4th of july weekend pics

i decided to post up a couple of more pictures directly…

on the last two shots i’m experimenting with a more “vintage” feel reminiscent of older photos we all remember from our youth. like digital audio, digital photo also seems to lack “character” which may loosely be defined as a kind of non-linearity. whether or not we actually prefer certain distortions because we actually prefer them, or because we’ve grown accustomed to them, is up for endless debate, but i love tube amps so you can probably see where i stand on the issue. 🙂

don’t get me wrong–i will not be giving up my digital image sensor and mp3s any time soon. i just recognize where newer is not always better, and in fact, can often be worse.

i’ve also added a link on the sidebar under the “flickr slideshows” that is a collection of my favorites on flickr (by other members). check it out if you’ve got a few minutes… there’s some incredible work in there (but not all of it is safe for work!).

   See, that first picture is awesome. It kicks ass. It’s artfully self-referential yet it is also just technically amazing. It’s the kind of picture that I would never think to take but couldn’t pull off if I tried anyway.

   I love the ghosts in the second image. And, maybe because I don’t understand photography, they are utterly inexplicable. Okay, so you exposed for a while. Still, you have a solid image and one or more very ghosted images and they are not the same child. And I can’t tell just how many ghosts there are. Spooky and just awesome.

   That last image tells a story. One little pensive girl has no sparklers and watches from the foreground. The picture seems festive yet sad, the same way the smoke seems distinct and unrelated to the sparkles.

   Damn fine work, man. Post more!
