my favorite greasemonkey flickr hacks

first of all, let me preface that for ALL of these little hacks you will need two things:

firefox
greasemonkey

greasemonkey is basically a java based script tool that fits inside of ff, and allows you to execute bits of code on the webpage as it comes down to the CLIENT side.

in other words, the server has nothing to do with it.

the other handy thing is that users are coming up with great scripts every day, and they work well. i’m no java programmer, but i’m able to poke my way around and customize them here and there to make them even more useful to me.

so here are the GM scripts that i CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT on flickr. all of them include links to the source pages. descriptions written by script authors are included. notes in italics are mine.

————————————————————————————————

flickr more activity links

Adds separated links for activities of the users photos and for activities of pictures which a user has commented.

The purpose of this greasemonkey script is to add separate links to activities on the users own pictures and to activities on pictures from others which he commented.

The following links are added:

* In the activity page there are now links named “mine” and “others” in the header of this page.
* In the “You” menu the entry “Recent Activity” was renamed to “Recent Activity (new)” and the entries “Recent Activity” and “Comments You’ve Made” have been added. These links behave similar to the previously existing links before the user interface changes.
* In the homepage the links ‘mine’, ‘others’ and ‘both’ are added next to the ‘Recent activity’ link

NOTE: this is REALLY handy for navigating the new “recent activity” flickr change

flickr link to user’s images in their groups

On profile pages, include links to find that user’s images in each of their groups. Based on Flickr: Show all images by Stephen Fernandez aka Steeev.

NOTE: adds little hyperlink to the end of the group link in the profile page

flickr: show all images by a user in his/her groups

NOTE: adds link beneath pool link on photo page

flicr filter hearts

This script filters images in flickr photo comments to make them more readable. Version 0.9

The purpose of this greasemonkey script is to filter images in photo comments.

Many people are annoyed by big images which are included in invitations or awards to some groups. This script replaces these images with the text “[image]”. It keeps buddy icons which are often used to reply to other comments. It also creates links to the original image.

NOTE: i love this script. nothing pisses me off more than big glittery fucking animated bullshit invites and comments cluttering up the pages

flickr cross recommendations

Adds a “People who faved this also faved…” panel to photos on Flickr

NOTE: really handy for “surfing” flickr and picking up new users/photos that you wouldn’t be able to find otherwise

flickr more home

By default, the Flickr home page shows four images for you, four from your contacts, and four from everyone. This script expands it to 8, 16, and 8, respectively. Requires Greasemonkey 0.8.

NOTE: makes the home page a lot more useful

flickr percentage of viewed favorites

Adds percentage of viewed that are favorites under “Viewed X times (Not including you)”.

NOTE: just kind of interesting

flickriver groups

Adds ‘Most interesting’ flickriver.com link to flickr group pages

NOTE: a handy way to surf the “best” work of a group (best according to flickr interestingness of course)

flickr multi group sender

It overrides the flickr “Send to Group” button above your photo/video and lets you send your Flickr image or video to multiple groups simultaneously

NOTE: if you belong to a lot of groups and send shots to them regularly, you NEED this script

flickr allsizes+

Quickly access all sizes for a Flickr photo. Copy the photo’s HTML (or BB Code), download the image sizes, and more. The script has customisable settings and auto-updates itself.

NOTE: another indispensable script if you post your shots on various BBS or blogs/webpages

flickr pm

Adds icons for Mail, Profile, Favourites, Scout, Interestingness, DNA, Leech and the user’s photo archive next to usernames in forums and on individual photo pages. It also allows you to send Flickr Mails without leaving the current page you are on.

NOTE: makes navigating a little quicker. interestingness destination site (off flickr) is broken ATM.

flickr on black

Adds “View on black” links in the right-hand panel on a Flickr photo page.

Uses Big Huge Labs’ On Black page to render the image on a black background.

NOTE: self-explanatory. i like the BHL on black implementation better than the flickriver one.

flickr refer comment

Auto comment the place where you come from

This will help you leave a trail of where you found the photo you are commenting on.

NOTE: i used to think it was stupid and cluttery, but i found myself reading the references when people would comment on my shots.

flickr photo page enhancer

Adds links to different sizes directly to a Flickr photo page, generates html code to easily copy’n paste thumbnail & description, and automatically loads your 20 most used tags when you click “Add Tag.”

This script does many things, and is the result of much feedback and discussion with the great Flickr Hacks community. The script adds direct links to all of an image’s sizes, as well as a “Quick Link” box to quickly copy and paste the HTML for a thumbnail link. It also automatically loads your most used tags whenever you click to add a tag to an image.

NOTE: the direct links to the jpg images are especially useful with the allsizes+ script (which puts them another click further away)

flickr exif decorator

Hover over a photo on Flickr to get an unobtrusive translucent overlay in the top left corner showing meta data including camera model, aperture and shutter speed.

NOTE: i use this all the time. very handy, plus you can select, copy, and paste the EXIF info from the popup.

how interesting?

Have you ever wondered just how interesting your Flickr photos are relative to each other? This Greasemonkey script will tell you. When installed, you will see an additional link displayed in the Additional Information section on your photo page: Check Interestingness Ranking.

NOTE: gives you a quick way to see how a particular photo is doing in your stream

view on flickriver
from flickriver.com Install “View on Flickriver” script

A Greasemonkey script that adds Flickriver links to various Flickr photo pages – user photos, favorites, pools etc, allowing to quickly open the corresponding Flickriver view.

Also, allows quickly viewing any Flickr photo on black background in large size.

NOTE: another handy one

vbulletin exif linker

Enhance EXIF viewing of mages posted in vBulletin forums

Now it’s much easier to get EXIF info on many images posted in vBulletin forums, even when the posted image itself doesn’t contain the EXIF info.

This script adds a small and clickable corner to embedded images in vBulletin postings. When you click on that corner, it will show you the EXIF information for that image in a new window.

NOTE: this also makes it easier to “backtrack” a single posted image w/o hyperlink to the original flickr page. you’ll also have to add the urls of vbulletin forums that you want it active on: by default it’s just dgrin.

Thanks for this great list –

I’ve been trying to find a script that will notify you when a photo reaches Explore. For now I’ve just been checking in scout, but here’s a script that’s pretty neat –
    http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/7048

Lets you know the photo’s rank in explore on the lower sidebar amongst “additional information”. I guess you just have to keep an eye out for it!

BTW – very pretty site you have here 🙂

The same is true of editors. ,
