textbooks have been written on the subject, by men much smarter and more learned than myself…

what ***I*** find intriguing about b+w is the reduction of information, the stripping away of color leaves only black, white, and gray shades to describe the scene.

not all scenes lend themselves to b+w… busy scenes can become too cluttered when rendered to monochrome, details lost in the confusion.

i find that i generally process my black and whites with a LOT more contrast. strong forms pop off the page. blocks of pure white and pure black dominate your eye, push it from place to place.

for me it is exactly that reduction of form, the constraint of un-colorness, which makes the art alive… like the rigid structure of a sonnet simultaneously shackles and sets free the poet, the black and white palate does so for the photographer. learning to ignore the color around you forces you to think about the simpler–but no less difficult to master–aspects of composition.

    I love number 7.

Char and Alena (in her underpants as usual) playing dress up in Alena’s room.

It’s a scene I’ve seen a million times but this picture just makes me look at it differently.

Maybe it is the black and white.

Of course number 8 is my favorite. Neither of Charlotte’s feet seem to be on the ground and her sense of urgency is so clear.

I love B&W and it’s an art form that only film does well. No matter what, it cheapens drawings, in which some detail is lost already and so much is interpretive. But it adds a whole dimension to photographs.

I agree that B&W is not right for all scenes, but I wouldn’t say it’s the level of detail that is key. It’s more like the type of detail. So, picture 6 couldn’t get much more busy but it is beautiful. Your eyes interpret the detail and you have to work a little harder, but what’s wrong with that?

So I think it’s the type of detail. What makes picture 10 so interesting is the details you might miss in color: the speckling; the dirt; the creases and dents bring this simple dial to life.

Picture 7 is gorgeous. And picture 9 is so richly textured it almost hurts to stare at it. Everything including the sky is perfect.

I love Black and white for all the above reasons and more. Most of my portraits are B&W and the customers just love them

    Great photos, Ken!

I guess the appeal of monochromatic photography is that it focuses on composition, and the play between light and shadow — effectively distilling the image down to its essence. Strangely, we seem to be far more lax in critically evaluating B&W images, I think; maybe it’s because we’re so used to super-sharp, highly-processed digital images nowadays. B&W’s heritage includes everything from artistic protraiture to guerilla photojournalism, so maybe that’s why we have no problem with high contrast, high ISO, fuzzy images, and everything else it comes with. God knows Tri-X just makes everything look good.

I don’t really know, I’m just thinking out loud here.

angelo, i totally agree. the latitude for “fucking with” a B+W image seems much wider. and that’s a good thing!

it’s funny how making something increasingly less detailed and accurate can actually enhance its emotional impact. i don’t know whether that is because our minds fill in the gaps, whether we’re conditioned by years of looking at old photos (ie nostalgia), or what..

Only you could pull off a turtleneck, Ken.

Seriously. How do you do that?
