   aaron,

   a good portion of that effect was done with a local contrast-enhancing photoshop plugin called lusicart. it is not cheap. some of what that filter does can be replicated in other, much less expensive ways.

   i also used a noise reduction filter, since the local contrast enhancement tends to increase noise levels.

   finally you need a wide angle lens, a crazy, attractive wife/model, a brand new dyson, and a motorcycle helmet. 😉
