Here are the manuals for the ’93 to ’96 imprezas.

Pre ’97 Impreza (including wrx):

new 02/11/11 thanks go to greg m. for the 1998 australian wrx wiring diagrams and engine diagnostic FSM pages.

thanks to sean, we have an alternate, improved 99-01 FSM and parts manual. according to his notes, this version is:
- FULLY BOOKMARKED! Each section is organized into ‘Parts Diagrams’, ‘Service Procedures’, etc. This was the main goal of this project.
- Fully searchable.
- Hi-res printable quality
- Service Manual from Subaru website
- Diagnostics Manual – from Subaru. Have been incorporated into the service manual in the proper section. ‘Troubleshooting’ sections are from the original service manual, ‘Diagnostics’ are from the Diagnostics Manual.
- Wheel Bearing installation update has been incorporated into the ’4-2 Wheels & Axles’ section
- Parts Manual – from your site, the author is listed as Buster F, so thanks!
- comes in two versions:
  - Mega-Manual – This is 65MB.
  - Mega-Manual – small – 21MB works great on a phone. Does not have parts manual and is not print quality.

thanks for your,s and Erics help . It appears that the manuals are for the 2.2ltr and 2.5ltr engines and my engine is a 2ltr. I am thinking these are US models and mine is an Australian model.I think most sections other than the engine will be of benefit to me.If someone has the manual on the 2ltr NON Turbo 99 model ,that would be the one i was really after.Thank you once again and I will keep an eye out if you post them in the future.

Hey, I’m looking for a 1997 Impreza manual. There were some sight changes in the 1998 models to the evaporation systems. I have a p1440 code that I can not diagnose because I don’t have any info on where the sensor is. I have been through all the manuals looking for it but have found nothing. I know it is a Fuel Tank Pressure Control System Low Input but I don’t know what this system is. More info here. Thanks!

pdftown.com has a 97-98 Impreza pdf 174 MB which is linked to rapidshare in 2 parts but both appear to be the same other than the packed size?

In regards to the rapidshare site for the 97-98 Rx impreza manuals. I have downloaded them and they are the same, there is no difference in the copies. They Skip some information, and they do not contain important information such as torque settings and clearances for setting up or rebuilding a motor. How different is the 97-98 EJ20 N/A motor compared to previous or subsequent year models?

Great resource!! Any idea where I might get a JDM 2.0T engine manual? I’m putting a 2.0T in our 00 RS and need to do a total rebuild to the engine prior to installation. Do I need to get the serial numnber or model of the engine to get the right manual? I’m an racer and engine rebuilder, but new to JDM. Thx

jose: yes it is. the only difference is noted in the engine sections: the DOHC engine is the 2.0l turbo (wrx).

no, no difference in tranny, other than ratios and/or center diff transfer ratio (watch the front vs. rear end ratios.. they must be equal once the transfer case is factored in). the cases, etc, are identical.

iirc, the gears come in pairs… 1+2, 3+4, then 5th. so you’d need 1+2. they CAN be ordered without ordering the entire gearset. check the parts diagrams/list here: http://www.ken-gilbert.com/wrx/mans/subie-impreza-outback-02-04-parts.pdf once you have a part # start calling dealers…

Holy crap Ken; this has taken off a bit since I last visited. Nice work Sir.

My thanks again for the original WRX service manual that I pinched from you. It has been invaluble, even more so since I managed to get the speach recognition working on my laptop. Long gone are the days of thumb prints all over an ever deteriorating service manual. There are a few pages missing which is why I have returned. I see you’ve now broken it down into several different files, presumeably you were aware of the issue.

I now also have a PDF copy of the 1992 Legacy service manual which I don’t think I sourced through you. If you would like a copy to add to the collection feel free to e-mail me and I’ll forward it on. The entire copy is just under 10mb.

I recently did a swap out of a 04 JDM STI to an 06 JDM STI, using the 06 harness, somehow the elec made a mess of it, the DCCD is currently not working. i thought it would have been a plug in affair as everything was from one car. I would like to get a 06 JDM wiring diagram. Hopefully it could be used to trace where it went wrong. Thanks.

First and most THANK YOU, KEN. Glad a found service manual for my ’01 RS. I have one quick question from the manaul regarding replacing the drivebelts. For the p/s and alt belt it says to torque both bolts to specific lbs but on the a/c bolts it only states to tighten the lock bolt to that what about the adjuster bolt same torque as lock bolt or as for the p/s and alt?

You don’t need to be very specific with torque specs on these parts. Just tighten it down with a wrench or a 3/8″ drive ratchet. Make it snug, no need to use body weight on these, maybe 30ft-lbs or something.

i have a my05 and would like to know which whole i can poke through to run the power cable through the engine to the inside of the car. do you have that type of information on your manauls.

that type of information is not given in the manuals. the manuals are intended for people with a Good idea and/or formal training in the field of automotive repair…

That whole you can find next to your brake/gas/clutch pedal you will see a rubber plug (grommet) push it out and you have access.

Actually, after some research, I haven’t really noticed much difference between the 1998 Legacy manual and the 99-01 Impreza manual posted here. Could one essentially use either of these to cover a 98′ Impreza? I’ve read that the mechanical layouts are very similar, and the Legacy and Impreza share the same 2.2 engine. any thoughts?

possibly, but i wouldn’t rely on it for electrical stuff. The engine and transmissions are probably very similar if not the same.

jeff: the ej257 (sti engine) is largely the same as the ej205 (wrx engine). the 60k maintenance covers the same issues.

if it makes you feel better, use the earlier model year ej257 manual.

Hi:

I have a 1995 Impreza Wagon, automatic transmission with a 2.2L engine. The manual for the 1993-1997 that you have does not describe the 2.2L engine. Is there a manual that I can use to work on my car? or which of the engines shown in your manual is equivalent to the 2.2L wagon. I have problems with the front differential(?), where the two front axels connect and I probably need to remove it and put a used or rebuilt one. When I put the car in drive, most of the time it does not move but all of a suddenthe gears engage and the car jerks and stops moving again. I have replaced both front axels, so it is not the axels. Also there is loud noise from the front differential when it engages. Any ideas on the cause of this problem. Is it a problem with the differential?

How’s it going. About to buy a 1992 wrx with a 1999 sti transmission. Owner says that after about 15 minutes of driving or some hard driving that a noise starts up because the gears are now wrong. My buddy gave me a good 1999 rear diff off his wreck and I can swap that out no problem but it doesn’t make sense that that is what’s causing the problem could you claify if I’m just stoopid or getting the runaround. I have a transmission seal leaking fluid and tried looking it up in your manuals. it is a seal going in to the tranny from the shifter linkage, and is located up and further back from where the drive shaft meets the tranny. Have any idea of what I’m talking about?

Ken, Ive seen different copies of the 2004 WRX STi service manual and all of them don’t have a H4DOHC section for the WRX engine. Is the section I should be using for the non-STi Turbo DOHC engine the STi section? There have been several times where the manual tells you to refer to the DOHC section but there isn’t one..I’m confused. Know anything about this?

I have two faults that I need direction.

I have a Clifton Manaual for my 1994 impreza 1800 (not much use)

1) I had a new battery go flat almost overnight .Current drain of more than 0.8 Amps permanently -at same time intermittent buzzing of a relay under the glove compartment until I removed the relay marked SBF#1.
Now I have no window motor contol – I assume central locking and window control is on this relay .

2)I have lost the Aircon – have never worked on a magnetic clutch unit before .
Should the clutch have a 13.8V or ground supply to actuate the aircon magnetic clutch.

side note, did you know that on a 2002 wrx, when you have the filaments for both headlights burned out, and turn on the fog lights, power will back-feed into the high beam indicator and light it up at ~1/4 brightness?

i did not until i had that specific scenario happen to me…

basically a good starting point is to run as much negative camber as you can get equally L-R using oem eccentric bolts, and set front and rear toe to zero.

obviously tweaking things from there can be beneficial, but generally requires additional hardware (another set of camber bolts, adjustable strut top plates, etc).

front end caster is generally seen as a “good thing” because it can dynamically increase negative camber while leaving it at a lower value at zero steering angle. people generally use an “anti lift kit” to move the rear lower control arm mount point, or camber/caster plates at the top of the strut to achieve this.

I have a ’97 WRX wagon, the issue I have is this…. water reservoir has oil spots, radiator has traces of oil. However there is no trace of water in the oil, Im thinking head gasket too, but then again Im worried its a front or rear seal. have you encountered this before? I need confirmation before i send it to the costly mechanics.

front or rear seals wont cause that..could be head gaskets do a radiator pressure test…is the car overheating?

Hi, THANKS for the service manual info!! ) The manual of the 1993-1996 covers all but…. THE non-turbo model. Covers turbo and non-turbo, but NOT the computer, harnesses, etc!
What I am after now is the schematic of the non-turbo ‘computer’.(ECU) Your manual has 4 main plugs going onto the computer, the factory vehicle I am trying to fix, has only 3 main plugs plugging into the computer. The Sub is a ’1997′, EJ20 single cam motor, Impreza wagon, 5 speed manual.(Oz model, bare bones, basic’s!) Genuine, factory, Au, built. If you could help point me in the right direction that would be great, maybe link/s? Thanks! Gav

I was wondering if you had a copy of the blob layout on the dask cluster for a Impreza RS 2003?.
The previous owner decided the fixed blown bulbs by throwing the parts away and I am lost as to which colour goes where.
There are around 10 black socketed one
3 blue one with large globe
and 2 red ones with I think the same globe as the black.
ANy help would be appriciated.

i downloaded all the pdf mentioned here in but.. sadly i can not get my head around .. i have a subaru impreza 94 – 1.8 fwd non turbo. the problem is the car wont start … i got fuel pressure but i dont have any spark .. now the manual mentioned here in doesnt exactly tell me how do u check the ecu because the pin and the colour does not match to my ecu … neither for the ignitor nor for the coil pack… if someone has a schematic for subaru impreza 94.. 1.8 fwd non turbo .. please share… desperate

Hi Ken I’m having hard time tracking a rx 3 gen auto subaru liberty 2002 ecu pin out would u have an Australia diagram seem to be different in other countries I’m chasing the vin number from the guy I bought it off as been told its the only way to fine any info on the ecu thanks as I’ve spent so long on my impreza build (three weeks) and counting,just need a little help

hi there ken very grateful of the pre97 electrical diagrams but im not sure how to get the pin out on the engine loom plugs . the 2 main 1s that seperate the engine loom from the body . i cant find them anywhere . cheers for any help trent
